Music Podcast!

Hi, everyone! In this article, I want to introduce you all to a really good music podcast called Dissect. It’s a Spotify Original podcast hosted by Cole Cuchna. You can obviously find it on Spotify, but you can also find it on any platform that provides podcasts. I started listening to Dissect pretty recently, and I really enjoy it! So, I’ll break it down for you since I hope you will start listening to it too.

The website for Dissect defines the podcast as “a serialized music podcast that examines a single album per season, one song per episode.” This is the best way to describe it. We live in a world where there is so much information - so much to listen to, so much to watch - that we often don’t have the time to truly appreciate the art we consume. Dissect gives music-lovers a perfect way to understand and appreciate the brilliance of music and albums.

As said before, the formatting of this podcast is not only very simple but also genius because it allows Cuchna (the host) to go into great detail with every work he analyzes. Each season is focused on one album (with one exception so far), and every episode focuses on one song. A typical episode goes like this: Cuchna plays short snippets of the song and then explains that passage; then another snippet is played. Sometimes, Cuchna will play a clip from an artist interview to expand on an idea or further a point. So far, there have been six full seasons and two mini-series.

Season 1 : To P*mp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar

Season 2 : My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West

Season 3 : Channel Orange & Blonde by Frank Ocean (the exception: two albums this season)

Mini-series 1 : The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill

Season 4 : Flower Boy by Tyler, the Creator

Season 5 : D*MN. by Kendrick Lamar

Season 6 : Lemonade by Beyoncé

Mini-series 2 : Black is King by Beyoncé

If you like any of the albums listed above, I would really recommend giving the episodes a listen. Personally, I have listened to season four on Flower Boy, and I’m currently listening to season one. I really enjoyed the analysis of Flower Boy because Cole Cuchna goes into great depth. While most music analysts focus on lyricism, Cuchna goes even deeper into the music by talking in great detail about music theory and production. Don’t worry, though. He, of course, still talks about lyrics a lot. I already really liked Flower Boy before listening to this podcast, and learning about all the cool musical techniques and production really helped me appreciate it more. Now, when I listen to the album, I’m able to recognize things that I would have never been able to hear and identify on my own.

If you have any music podcasts that you particularly enjoy, please share them with me! I would love to find more to listen to. I hope you all will check out Dissect. I promise you won’t regret it!
