Can you imagine living on a planet with no clean air or water, no fresh food and trash covering every surface? At some point, if we don’t all work to stop it, that’s going to happen. We only have a limited amount of time to save our Earth.
We live in a society where the biggest things on our minds are cramming for the next test, the big game coming up or making plans with friends. It’s so hard to get out of our suburban lifestyle and focus on global issues. We read about environmental problems in the news and see depressing pictures of our planet’s state on social media, but it is rare that we take action.
I am going to share my eco-friendly swaps with you in this blog series. There are so many little things that we can do in our daily lives to be more environmentally conscious. I will talk about food waste, fast fashion, composting, recycling and the meat industry.
Before all of that, I think it’s important to talk about why all of this matters. So I have included some facts about our planet:
It takes 2,700 liters of water to make one cotton t-shirt.
Landfills are composed of 35% packaging materials.
Rainforests are cut down at a rate of 100 acres per minute.
137 species go extinct every day.
Only 1% of our planet’s water supply can be used.
Meat production demands more than 2,000 trillion tons of water every year, or 63 million liters a second.
As of October 2019, there is only 68% of coral reefs left in the world.
People consume 160,000 plastic bags a second and not even 1% of these bags are recycled.
The toilet paper we use could go around the planet every two minutes or travel to the sun and back every 10 days.
A football field size of forest is cut down every 1.4 seconds.
